eternal
Some reviews are in following Press Night: Gareth Gates tops the bill as 'Jack'. Happy to be playing a role other than the prince, Gates' performance is both understated and credible. Whilst a show like this is absolutely about the star names on the bill, the setup of pantomime is gruelling and takes its toll. Gates is a safe pair of hands who gets stuck into the spirit of things and has a strong singing voice. http://www.blackcountryradio.co.uk/blogs/theatre/post/review-jack-and-the-beanstalk-at-wolverhampton-grand/?utm_content=buffercdda8&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer Gareth Gates sang beautifully, and it was a pleasure to hear him sing Unchained Melody. It was surprising that pop songs were used throughout the show, as I have never come across that in a panto before. It really worked though, and I found myself thinking that that Jack and the Beanstalk soundtrack would be a number one seller! http://whatsgoodtodo.co.uk/jack-and-the-beanstalk-at-the-wolverhampton-grand-review/ X Factor star Gareth Gates is marvellous as Jack the lad himself https://lichfieldlive.co.uk/2017/12/13/review-jack-and-the-beanstalk-at-the-grand-theatre-in-wolverhampton/
eternal
But leading man and star of the show is Gareth Gates, looking rugged and sounding smooth. His pop star vocals are as sweet as ever, and he treats us to a rendition of Unchained Melody that gives me shivers. He looks great in panto costume and handles the action well, leaving the broad comedy to the others. His voice blends well with Sarah Vaughan’s Jill, and a traditional routine on a wall with interference from Simple Simon offers one of this funny shows funniest moments. There is a chaotic version of The 12 Days of Christmas, complete with water pistols, and a delightful moment with youngsters brought up from the audience. https://bumonaseat.wordpress.com/2017/12/12/beanz-meanz-lolz/ http://www.thereviewshub.com/jack-and-the-beanstalk-grand-theatre-wolverhampton/ http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/whats-on/theatre-news/review-jack-beanstalk-wolverhampton-grand-14032489 http://www.fashion-mommy.com/2017/12/13/jack-and-the-beanstalk-is-brilliant-fun-at-wolverhampton-grand/ http://www.behindthearras.com/Reviewspr/2017/reviewPROOctDec2017/jack-and-the-beanstalk-review-G12-17.html http://www.halesowennews.co.uk/leisure/hnleisuretheatre/15769087.Review__Jack_and_the_Beanstalk_full_of_Black_Country_fun_for_the_whole_family/ Blimey it was a busy press night!
lindajan
Thanks, Chris, for the links to all the reviews - will catch up on them later. I don't know where the reviewer that commented on pop songs being used has been for the last few years, as every panto that Gareth has done has used pop songs (and I'm sure other pantos are the same) - it's what the kids know and gets them even more involved. Looking forward to seeing this tomorrow.

All the characters are so good and the scenery is amazing. Gareth was fantastic and his voice so lovely. He sang Unchained Melody which got a fabulous reception. So so pleased was able to go.
