As we celebrate Spring, sorry to drag this up from those cold winter days but thought this article, seen on one of the musical theatre websites, very interesting:

Qdos Entertainment, the UK’s largest pantomime producer, has unveiled record results for its 2011/12 Christmas season with box office up by nearly £1 million on the previous year.

The company produced 23 UK shows last winter, recording audiences of 1,216,000 and ticket sales of £21.1 million. Both figures were up on the previous season, which saw sales of £20.2 million and attendances of 1,157,000. This represented a 5% increase in attendance and a 4.2% increase in takings.

Qdos chairman Nick Thomas said: “Pantomime has a strong place in the festive season and it’s clear people still want their families and friends to have a good time at Christmas which is why our business remains so buoyant against the economic uncertainty.”

The company’s 23 pantomimes took an average of more than £900,000 each, with 11 of the shows taking in excess of £1 million at the box office.

Meanwhile, Thomas announced that Qdos will stage 24 pantomimes this coming season, with the 2,300-seat Mayflower Theatre in Southampton added to its line-up.

Advance box office for the 2012/13 season currently stands at more than £6 million.

Seems our Christmas family traditions are making a huge hit.
